Quick Guide - Finding information about VRAM directly in DAZ Studio

$

0

This information was originally posted in some other threads. Thanks to everyone who helped putting those pieces together.

I repost it here in the form of a summary to make that information accessible without the need to read through a lot of other information.

- - -

- What is VRAM and why does it matter when rendering with DAZ Studio Iray?

When you render with your video card (aka GPU - Graphics Processing Unit) all the geometry and textures of objects in your scene need to be loaded in the memory of the video card. This memory is called Video RAM or short VRAM.

- What happens when you do not have enough VRAM to fit the scene?

If the available VRAM is not large enough to fit all textures and geometry then Nvidia Iray will switch from GPU mode to CPU mode. This means your video card will not be used at all and rendering will be much slower.

- Where can you find information about VRAM directly in DAZ Studio without using 3rd party applications?

There are two different "logs" that you can check when you want to know how much VRAM is available to use for rendering with DAZ Studio Iray.

- - -

1) The DAZ Studio log file

DAZ Studio creates an official log file that you can access

Help -> Troubleshooting -> View Log File...

The log file then should pop up like this:

If you search the DAZ Studio log file for the term "NVidia Iray GPUs" you will find the information about your system and installed video cards.

-> This will show you how much VRAM is installed as total and how much of that is available for use.

- - -

2) The render log window

When you click on "Render" in the Render Settings tab two windows open if you choose to render to a window

- the "render window" will display the render in progress

- a "render log window" opens showing information about the render in progress

By default that log window may be hidden behind the render window.

-> Manually drag and resize both windows so you can see both properly while rendering.

-> This will tell how much VRAM is used for

Geometry memory consumption

Texture memory consumption

Lights memory consumption

Material memory consumption

etc.

-> If you add up all those values you know the memory consumption of your scene.

How can you tell if Iray is currently rendering in CPU or GPU mode?

In the render log window search for an entry like this:

Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER): 1.13 IRAY rend progr: CPU: Processing scene...

-> If the word CPU shows up in your render log window Iray has switched to CPU mode.

How can you find out why Iray switched to CPU mode?

- Compare the entry “available memory” from the DAZ Studio log file to the entries Geometry, Texture and Light memory consumption in the render log window.

If the sum of the “memory consumption” is higher than the “available memory” Iray was switching to CPU mode as intended.

- Check both the DAZ Studio log file and the render window log for error messages.

Vray don't work

Hey guys, first of all, I do not speak english!

First see this image (https://twitter.com/Tyrion_Master/status/870879286332456960/photo/1)

I started having this problem when I changed the settings, when I open the program, the first render works!, but after that... Change settings to normal doesn't work, and technically, lower settings are the right choice for my video card.

And, it's not VRAM problem. Please, Help me!!!

Install help for : Genesis 3 clones for Genesis.

Hi I need several figures for a project,  an artist who is  familiar with daz is building the faces on  victoria 5 figures. I picked out hair and cloths and she is helping put the hair and cloths on the figures. She said that my choices were not compatible so an addon was needed: Genesis 3 clones for Genesis.

This was not too expensive so I bought it and sent her the zip file, but she reports that after installing she cannot use the product. She contated Daz for help but they never responded, so I am reposting here.

I took the following steps to install the product:
1. IM00024121-01_Genesis3FemaleCloneforGenesis\Content\data\DAZ 3D\Genesis\Base\Morphs\SickleYield\Genesis3Clones
- in this folder there are 14 items,
i copied these to :
C:\Users\DELL\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio4\content\data\DAZ 3D\Genesis\Base\Morphs\SickleYield\Genesis3Clones
note: i did put the Genesis folder to the C:\Users\DELL\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio4\content\data\DAZ 3D.

2. IM00024121-01_Genesis3FemaleCloneforGenesis\Content\People\Genesis\Poses\Foot Helper Poses
containes 8 items,
copied to:
C:\Users\DELL\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio4\content\People\Genesis\Poses\Foot Helper Poses
note: did put the genesis folder here: C:\Users\DELL\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio4\content\People

3. And i made the same with the support folder also:
IM00024121-01_Genesis3FemaleCloneforGenesis\Content\Runtime\Support
3 items to
C:\Users\DELL\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio4\content\Runtime\Support

And when i try to use the product with the Autofit plugin as the tutorial shows on the page (https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-3-female-clone-for-genesis), it doesnt work, it seems the Autofit plugin doesnt recognise the addon.
I dont know what i did wrong. Can anyone help?
The version im using is 4.9 (64bit)

Interior Iray Render Times

Okay, I have an interior scene I purchased, with tons of emissive ceiling lights. It looks great, but takes forever to render as the light rays bounce all over the place. We're talking at least an hour with some G3's in the scene.

Now, when I remove the ceiling, and have the interior scene lit by just the exterior HDR it not only looks great, but the render time is just a fraction. Presumably because all of the ceiling bounces are bypassed.

Problem solved, except when I point the camera up to where the ceiling should be of course I see the exterior HDR.

So is there some way to have the best of both worlds? Have the ceiling visible in the render, but remove it from the bounce light calculations or whatever?

Maybe Canvases? But I'm not sure how that would work....

Thanks.

Renaming Scene/DUF Files

$

I had a sneaking suspicion when I renamed a couple of scene files in Windows Explorer it might cause problems, and sure enough it did. Now when I go into Smart Content it seems to be remembering the old file, and gives me an icon with an exclamation with the old scene file name. However in the Content Library all is well and updated to the new name.

I even tried doing a right click and Refresh, but that did nothing.

Now I saw that some older posts suggested the Remove Orphans option under Content Database Management, but that option no longer appears.

So two questions:

1. How do I update the file to the new scene file name in Smart Content?

2. In the future, how should I go about renaming or deleting scene files?

Thanks.

moving content to another disk: can my scenes still load?

Hi,

I would like to move my content directory to another hard disk. I'm guessing that if i just do that (and make a new reference in the CMS to the new drive), DAZ won't find my models when I load a scene? is there a way to remedy this?

Thank you!

Import obj files

Ok i created a shirt in marvelous designer 6 and i import it to the appropriate character. Do i have to zero out genesis 2 character and load it as a static prop and hit triangulate Because when I pose the charector the shirt doesn't move with genesis2 It stays in the same position . When i was able to rig it on to the Genesis2 charector after it was posed i couldn't rotate or translate it. Just scale it which is obviously gets to big Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

I just made and exported a piece of clothing from zbrush to DAZ but whenever I transfer the utility from Gen3 Female to this clothing and change any of the morph on Gen 3 the clothing deforms horribly

See the image below for before and after changing the morph

Does anyone know how to solve this? What did I miss?

Sea Scapes water, understanding odd appearance

I'm attempting to do a 3DL render using Sea.duf from Sea Scapes ( https://www.daz3d.com/sea-scapes ) and I'm getting this weird blue-black mottled pattern where a spotlight is shining on it.  Any ideas what is causing this and/or how I can make it look like actual distant water?  The top half of the screenshot (showing the reflection of something yellow off screen in the distance) has normal-looking waves/ripples on a dark surface, it's just the part that's illuminated by the spotlight that completely deviates from a real water appearance.   The entire scene is enclosed by a very dark stone object, so the dark water and lack of sky reflection is as expected.

DAZ Studio IRay Advanced Render Settings Issues (GPU)

Running my new laptop HP Pavillion which has a GE Force 940MX Card (2G memory). 12 meg memory. Rendering a simple scene the scene with GPU+CPU+Optix. Test renders were running lightning fast with first image displaying after 1 minute 5 seconds. Impressive. Then the renders just suddenly froze up. It gets stuck on the step "Geometry Memory Consumption" and then just stays there. After many attempts of restarting Daz. Resaving the file. To no avail....then I discovered if I deleted the character from my scene, and then did Edit > Undo...I would be able to render the scene again. It sounds like something maybe stuck in the GPU Memory that doesn't get cleared from a prior render. Deleting the character and undoing the delete seems to be a workaround that help. Perhaps someone at Daz can identify the cause of the problem?

Is there a way to recover an old DAZ Studio .daz scene file?

$

I have a .daz file that was probably created with D|S 4.0.2. In the interim, my content directories have been changed significantly, so when I first tried to load the file, Studio complained about large numbers of missing texture maps.

I reinstalled all the missing content, and Studio loaded the scene without complaining ... until the very end, when it reported that "some files were missing", and advised me to look at the log. (After the load, I was left with an empty scene).

The log file contains around 3,000 lines of the format:

Unable to find file for storable: data/4_0_2/Genesis/Genesis/modifiers/morphs/MCMV5Surprise_247.dsd
Unable to find file for storable: data/4_0_2/Genesis/Genesis/modifiers/morphs/MCMV5SnarlRight_92.dsd
Unable to find file for storable: data/4_0_2/Genesis/Genesis/modifiers/morphs/MCMV5SnarlLeft_149.dsd
Unable to find file for storable: data/4_0_2/Genesis/Genesis/modifiers/morphs/MCMV5SmileSimple_1052.dsd
Unable to find file for storable: data/4_0_2/Genesis/Genesis/modifiers/morphs/MCMV5SmileB_623.dsd

My assumption is that these data files are compiled on demand from content geometries, and serve as a kind of cache, and that the process of loading a .daz file actually consists of pulling in all the cache files referenced by the .daz file. If the cache (.dsd) files are missing, the scene won't load.

My data/4_0_2 directory has long gone the way of the dinosaurs. Is there any way that I can make this .daz file openable again, or is it gone forever?

Posing dials; G3F is snappy, G3M is sluggish

Has anyone else noticed that G3M poses more slowly than G3F does? If I load up one of each and start posing (turning transform dials on body parts), G3M seems noticeably slower to respond. (Which seems odd, given that my G3F is a much "heavier" figure than my G3M (many, many more morphs))

To the point that G3F seems kinda snappy, and G3M seems kinda sluggish. It's not a huge difference, but it's definitely noticeable.

Move rotations from hip to root while keeping figure in place?

$

I've asked about this before and IIRC the answer was "no," but I've reason to ask again, just in case. Is there a way to transfer the rotations on a figure from the hip node to the root node (thus un-zeroing the root node, and zeroing the hip node, obviously), without changing the figure's position in the world coordinate system?

I just discovered that I can rotate (but not translate, for some reason) multiple selected figures using the rotation parameters, if the parameters have the same name, so that they're consolidated. This has been a feature wish of mine for ages (I know I can parent objects to other objects and transform the parent, but I want something that doesn't depend on parenting, since "parent in place" doesn't seem to work in most of the cases I need it to).

Unfortunately, a good while back, when I started using hierarchical pose presets, I decided to make a standard practice of locking the root node of figures, and using the hip node for all rotations. And rotating multiple figures using the parameters only preserves the relationship between the selected figures if I use the root node, not the hip node. In other words, I think I'm going to change my standard practice.

Unfortunately, all of my many hierarchical pose presets were created using my previous standard practice. So I'm going to need some way to convert them all, and I don't think doing it by hand will be feasible.

Remote Desktop to DS

Hi

I have a Titan Nvidia card in my home PC, perfect for IRAY.    When I'm out of town I'd like to Remote Desktop from laptop to home, and render using Daz Studio there...  but can't, because DS complains it doesn't have the minimum requirements (I guess over Remote Desktop) to run.

Is there any way to get around this?   Maybe some start-up arguments or something.  Thanks much
