After several years away, and a new computer, I reinstalled DAZ Studio. Using thee Install Manager and added just a few items. Then I started to open Studio. It started to open only to have it tell me that it's "Upgrading CMS" and there it sits. It's been doing this since 7am and it's still sitting there!!!! Now what do I do????

Render or light not acting right
I'm new (well, trying again) to DAZ Studio a relative veteran of Poser but wanting to use newer Genesis products. Anyway, I'm reviewing some tutorials and getting to lighting and rendering I posed a Victoria 6 with no props or backgrounds, added a blue distant light positioned high to her left and slightly behind. The render is interesting, but not what I want or expect, but can't tell what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated!

Viewport colors in lighting different from Render
Got a question, I am making an animation, but having 2 problems that I can't figure out. The colors in my Viewport from the lighting look the way I want them too and the eyes and skin have a perfect color and the sky too, but when I render everything looks different, the eyes are no longer green, the skin is different and the whole sky and colors are different. I tried several different single renders with different Environment modes and that didn't work to fix it either, I am totally out of ideas to make the render look like it does in the Viewport. The second problem is that white spot that appears in the render in the bottom right corner, I tried doing a render with each of the 4 lights off and it didn't change anything either. Any help on these couple of problems would be greatly appreciated!!!

Also ,ich habe folgendes Problem ich habe Figuer und alles andere gesetzt da rendert es aber so bald ich licht hinzufüge bricht mein daz zusammen .Was kann ich ändern damit ich es render kann?
So, I have the following problem I have Figuer and everything else set because it renders but as soon as I add light breaks my daz together. What can I change so I can render it?
Just lost all products
Hi, so I was playing around with a new G8 figure, had added some wardrobe and hair, mixing in a bit of G3 content. Then I was going to pose the character and happened to decide that I wanted to try a G3 pose so I turned off filter by content and DAZ crashed (sadly, a too frequent occurrence for what is otherwise a great app).
On reopening, I noticed that the products tab for smart content is now completely empty. The files show up fine on the files tab, but nothing in products. It's been ages since I've mucked around with the CMS DB, what's the correct process for refreshing the content from my installed metadata?
Applied shader hiding mesh detail...
Hello all =)
One image I have a texture applied to the background prop, on the other a reflective metal. The detail of the prop that is visible with the metal applied is somewhat lost, and Id like to know why, what I can do to fix or enhance. If the detail is from the mesh, i dont understand why its lost when textures are applied =/
any advice, suggestions or ideas would be immensely appreciated.
Advanced Iray Node Properties - What is "Iray Handle" used for?
In the content library you can find a script to Create Advanced Iray Node Properties.
DAZ Studio Formats > My DAZ 3D Library > Scripts > Utilities > Create Advanced Iray Node Properties
While the use of "Iray Matte" is explained on the forum I was not able to find information about the "Iray Handle" parameter.
- - -
You can also find the script in the "Default Resources" Product:
- - -
"Enable Iray Matte"
I was able to follow the tutorials how to create "matte" objects to catch shadows in Iray.
compare:
Video: Matte Function in Iray DAZ Studio - Shadow Catcher #2

Iray Handle
When using the script to
Create Advanced Iray Node Properties
there is also an entry created called "Iray Handle"
- - -
Observations:
It seems you can enter a name.
In the example I entered "ground plane".
A handle may be something like an "object id" that then can be used to call that object in some other functions.
But I was not able to find any information how it is used in the Iray integration for DAZ Studio.
- - -
Questions:
1) How is this "Iray Handle" used in DAZ Studio?
2) Why do users have to run a script to show the parameters "Enable Iray Matte" and "Iray Handle"?
Can users break any functionality if they experiment with those settings without knowing what exactly to do?
Why are those settings not shown by default?
Quadro cards and opengl in daz
Hi, I would like to ask if someone here has experience using a quadro card for the scene preview in DAZ. It is assumed that the quadro cards are better for the opengl than the GTX. I am contemplating buying a basic quadro to make animations and to see them more fluidly in the viewport, because I experiment lag with a GTX 1060. I clarify again that I'm not interested in using a quadro for iray, but for the opengl preview, to make animations. Some people may tell me that there is no difference between the GTX and the Quadro for the DAZ preview and that is true for static scenes, but I am asking for animations. Greetings.
Iray emissive map v. material zones (high poly) - which is more efficient?
Imagine I've got a sphere (reasonably high-res to look like a sphere in close-up with smoothing on) and I want a single line around the equator to glow.
Would it be better to use an emissive map (at 4096x4096) or to set a ring of polys as a separate material and set that to emissive.
With the latter there would be a lot of polys, each being its own emissive plane, but would using a map instead make a difference?
Good morning How do I import a vdb file?
[Good morning How do I import a vdb file?]
Try to import volume metric clouds, smoke lights, etc.
My source is ready and how do I import it?
Cleanup all nonexistent items
In my time of installing some stuff manually, I have moved stuff to different folders over time and this leads to basically empty icons that do not do anything but do fill up space which is annoying but deleting them one at a time would be more annoying is there a clean all empty button somewhere?
Iray DAZ Studio - Light Path Expressions
I stumbled upon Light Path Expressions with the help of Richard while trying to figure out an Advanced Iray Node Property.
Light Path Expressions can be used to split the rendered information based on their path into specific sub images.
The images could be exported as .exr files that allow for advanced compositing techniques in photoshop.
The basic idea is to render the images once and then if you or the client wants to change some effects this can be done without the need to rerender all the images but with more time efficient photoshop editing.
I will first provide the links to the official information and then provide some examples how Light Path Expressions could be accessed from the DAZ Studio Iray Canvases settings.

"An LPE is a regular expression that matches some light transport paths that iray generates, but not others. Each result buffer can be associated with a LPE so that only paths which match the expression end up contributing to that buffer. Iray also allows you to render several buffers with different LPEs at the same time at almost no additional runtime cost. LPEs can distinguish between different surface properties such as diffuse or glossy, reflection or refraction, types of light sources, and names."

Now that you read trough all that the basic idea should be more clear.
Now how can we access Light Path Expressions in DAZ Studio?
When you set up "Canvases" in the "Advanced" tab of the Iray Render Settings in the pulldown menu for "Type" you can select "LPE.
When you select LPE you can enter an expression.
- - -
Side Note: Depending on the layout colors the Canvas options in the "Advanced" tab can be hard to spot.
The colors can be adjusted in Window -> Style - Customize Style.

Light Path Expression examples:
Lets start with the expressions introduced in this blog entry:
http://blog.irayrender.com/post/37260056351/instant-relighting-nonphysical-effects
The DAZ Studio "Primitives test scene" is attached to this post as a .zip for those interested.
I will just use quotes from the blog entry for the official explanations.
Le .* E
"We are interested in light emitted by the environment (Le
) that bounces from any type of surface any number of times and then hits the eye (E
). As in standard regular expressions, the dot character matches any interaction, and the star operator means “repeat any number of times”. So, we get "Le .* E"
for our first buffer"
Le = light emitted by the environment (Le
) that bounces from any type of surface any number of times
E = then hits the eye (E
)
. = the dot character matches any interaction
* = the star operator means “repeat any number of times"
If you use Le .* E in the test scene you get this
- - -
Le .* S (D|G) E
"The other light is an area light, so we can filter for La
. Or, we can filter for the names of groups of lights as well as individual ones. The caustics we are interested in have had any number of arbitrary interactions with the scene before hitting a specular surface and then ending up on some diffuse (or glossy) surface. The corresponding LPE is "La .* S (D|G) E"
. Instead of (D|G)
, we can also use [DG]
or [^S]
."
There is no area light used in the DAZ Studio test scene as in the blog example. Therefore we can use once again Le for the Environment light instead of La for the area light.
Le = light emitted by the environment (Le
) that bounces from any type of surface any number of times
E = then hits the eye (E
)
. = the dot character matches any interaction
* = the star operator means “repeat any number of times"
S (D|G) = Diffuse or glossy surface
If you use Le .* S (D|G) E in the test scene you get this

The point of this first entry was to show how Light Path Expressions can be accessed from the DAZ Studio Canvases.
By following the official Nvidia Iray blog entries you may find more examples how Light Path Expressions can be used to composite images.

Searching for a GasMask...
Hi there!
Again some product questions...
Does anyone know where i get get a gasmask like used in the promorender here:
https://www.daz3d.com/ultrahd-iray-hdri-with-dof-abandoned-urban-ruins

And the trousere the guy wears are great, too. :D
I hope someone could help me! :)
FBX export Finger joint alignment issue
I made a character in Daz Studio 4.9. I exported the character as an fbx to be used in 3ds max. When I select the characters finger bones in 3ds max, the pivot point is aligned to the world even when I set the reference coordinate system to local. This makes it extremely difficult to animate the hands doing much of anything. The other joints all seem fine.
I have attached an image.
Has anyone else run into this issue and is there an easy fix?
Attention Petipet Ensk Station Does Not Work
Ok well hopefully this gets your attention. If you were involved in the repair of the Ensk Station, for some reason the second file loads nothing but those frustrating grey boxes. it referes to a location that does not exist at all anywhere in the known universe. I even tried to trick it into loading something by transfering all the files into a new folder called Ensk Outpost, well that did not work either. I put in a Help Center Ticket on, March 06 2018, and today March 15 2018 i was told it was fixed. No it wasn't. This has become a source of total frustration. Can you Petipet help?
What's the best method to export to Marvelous Designer?
So I have seen people doing it in 3 different ways:
1) Export as Collada (dae) - contains the avatar, textures and animation data
2) Export as FBX
3) Export avatar as OBJ and animation as MDD (Requires animate)
What are the big differences between those methods and which one has the fastest draping/record speed?
Asymetrical Adjustments to the Eyes and Ear on G8M?
I'm working on a character that needs one eye higher than the other and an ear higher than the other. I could have sworn I could do this on previous models, but I can't find it on the Genesis 8 Male anywhere. Can any one help out here?
